#MitBStorybookproject: What is your very first memory of music?

Me, age 3, in front of my grandfather’s record player cabinet

My very first memories of music are at my grandparents’ houses, both my mother and father’s side.

At the Lipman house (my mother’s side) my grandfather listened to records throughout the day. I would ask my grandfather to play one of my favorites and he would put it on as a before-bedtime listen. They were Peter and the Wolf and Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, followed closely by Tubby the Tuba. I remember my grandfather humming melodies by Beethoven or Brahms throughout the day.

At the Gimbel house I loved to play the piano. My grandmother had a few beginning piano books that I would plunk away at. An adult would inevitably come by at some point in my efforts and help steer me in the right direction, releasing me from the beginnings of frustration -- I was just dying to be able to play! Story has it, that because I was the light of my grandfather’s eye I got away with my noisy tinkering upstairs while he met with clients in his downstairs office. Lucky me♥︎
